Hi Discovery Parents,

I thought I knew what it was like to miss people in June, but it really doesn’t compare to now.  The fact is I just miss each and every one of you…a lot!!  I truly hope you are all doing well, and that you’re ready to embark on a more robust distance learning program.  I wanted to give you some information that I am sure you are all most anxious to hear about.

Discovery made two really big decisions that we feel will help our families.  The first decision is that we have agreed to use ClassDojo as our school-wide communication system.  The program allows teachers to post announcements and reminders along with other things.  I can also send out announcements school-wide to ensure that we keep all parents in the loop of what is going on.

  • The second decision we made is to have all school work go through Google Classroom (except for Kindergarten.  They will only be using ClassDojo for communication and assignments).  We hope this makes things easier for you to locate work, monitor work such as completed and missing assignments as well as grades your child will receive.
  • Teachers return to work on August 11th.  We will begin our day by having our teachers enter their classes into ClassDojo and sending the parents “an invite”.  Parents will need to accept the invite to establish the beginning of our communication.  That will also be the way you find out who your child’s teacher is this school year.  As the week of August 11th progresses, your teacher will be able to send you information on what the daily schedule will look like.  For now, plan that your child will be either getting instruction either whole class or small group, working on the assignments independently that were given during instruction, independent reading, individual or group assessments etc. during the hours that school would be in session which is 8:40 – 2:55.  Your teacher will give you much more specific information when they return.
  • The first day of school is Monday, August 17, 2020.
  • We purchased supplies that students will need at home.  The list is similar to what they would have access to at school such as whiteboards, marker, eraser, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.  We will be distributing supplies to families beginning August 10th through August 14th.  Transitional kindergarten students, kindergarten students, and first-grade students will also get a Chromebook distributed to them at this time.  The schedule is below:

Mon. Aug. 10th - 10:00 - 12:00 TK & K                    Tues. Aug. 11th - 1:00 – 2:30 – 2nd grade

                      12:00 - 2:00 1st grade                                                2:30 – 4:00 – 3rd grade

NO DISTRIBUTION ON WEDNESDAY

Thurs. Aug. 13th - 10:00 - 12:00 4th grade               Fri. Aug. 14th  - 10:00 – 12:00 – 6th grade

                       12:00 - 2:00 - 5th grade                                    12:00 – 2:00 – Makeups for all grades

Enjoy the last few days of your summer break, and know that we are here ready to serve you and your children.

Take care,

Linda Rueter, Principal
